Gokarna : A Brief Profile

..................................................................................................................................................

Shree Mahabala Deva Temple, Gokarna is a sacred pilgrimage site amongst Indian Places. Located at the western coast of India, Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. This is considered as one of the seven Mukti Kshetras of India.

The Mahabaleshwar temple enshrines the Aatma Lingam of Lord Shiva. Legend has it that the holy Lingam was given by Shiva to King Ravana to make his kingdom an invincible fortress. Varuna and Ganesha tricked Ravana into placing the Lingam here and in spite of the might exerted by Ravana (Maha Bala) the Lingam remained rooted to the ground. The Shiva Mahabala Deva temple is regarded to be next in sanctity only to the Vishwanath Siva Temple in Varanasi and is often called the Dakshina Kashi.

Gokarna is also known for its idyllic beaches and serene landscape. It also has a number of tourist points nearby.

History takes us to the chapter, that Sri Ramachandrapura Matha owned this temple. Now, legaly the Government Of Karnataka delivered this temple back to Matha. Sri Matha has many development plans, both social and religious - to improve the Gokarna archetecture, to make it emerging in the International level as a Hindu Religious point.

Shivaratri is the yatra held at Gokarna, which attracts millions of piligrims and devotees.

    Hi,

Last time when I visited Gokarna, my experience at the Mahabelshwar Temple wasn’t very good. First the entry fee to get into the tempel and then the bhatji selling Milk abhisheka and feeding some 20 brahmins and taking about Rs.2000+. It was not a very pleasant experience.

I am groping in the dark trying to research the historical background of Gokarna, i hope an official historical data is published by the temple. As far as my knowledge goes the temple seems to have been re-built. The vijaynagar emperors were involved in the temple construction. The earlier Mayur varma connection too needs to be explored. How Gokarna escaped the Portuguese persecution will be interesting facts. I request the trust to publish a beautiful book for all tourists.
